Weather Synopsis for Sunday night through Tuesday

Wow! What a beautiful day in the mountains. Sure, there are a few isolated clouds out there, but basically, it's wall-to-wall sunshine and warm temperatures. Stronger winds continue to blow in the higher terrain near the volcanoes and east of the Cascade crest. The high-pressure ridge responsible for all this spring-like weather will stay with us for another couple of days and keep us warm and dry.

The ridge shifts inland this evening, turning the upper-level flow more northwesterly. This will draw much warmer air into the PNW. Weak temperature inversions may form in some of the mountain valleys and passes, but just above, temperatures will be on the rise. By Monday morning, freezing levels should reach 9000-10500ft. Not surprisingly, we're in for another warm sunny day. 5000ft temperatures should easily make it into the upper 40s and maybe top 50F in the afternoon.

Clear skies Monday night should once again allow for a bit of nighttime cooling and temperature inversions. However, many sites might struggle to dip below freezing. While Tuesday will start warm and sunny, you'll begin to see the signs of a looming weather pattern shift. Southwesterly winds increase across the mountains in the morning. By the afternoon, clouds should roll into the region, thicken, and lower. Precipitation appears to hold off until overnight, but the message is clear, a storm is knocking on our doorstep.

Directions above indicate the direction the wind blows from on the 16-point cardinal scale. These winds indicate "free" winds, or those winds in the atmosphere not influenced by terrain. Topographical effects may produce greater or lower wind speeds in certain locations as well as significant variations in direction.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Tuesday night through Thursday

An approaching storm arrives Tuesday evening. It will take a bit for the cold front to displace the warm air, but once it does, snow levels plummet. Precipitation spreads NW to SE overnight. By Wednesday morning snow should fall below all of our Cascade Passes. There are still plenty of questions regarding the timing, track, and strength of this storm. No matter what, they all agree we're in for a significant pattern shift. Post-frontal showers and a few weak disturbances should keep cooler weather and showers in the forecast for the rest of the week.
